Cashmere Valley
Thousands of acres, apple blossoms
by the highway headed home
(after the craggy mountains,
forest green, snow crested walls
that keep coastal clouds from creeping
into fragrant Columbia valleys)
say welcome home, it’s April,
your lawn grew out of control
while you were away
the steelhead run fills your creek
and the sunshine barely remembers
you and your squinty smile.

The sisters who sing
back up to the band
move their bodies to say
they know harmony the way women
and their lovers know harmony
the way hungry bodies dance
on the veranda in the sun
after margaritas and palms
kiss away the pain.

For George
He smelled of anesthesia
lying in his hospital bed
feeling his years, faded and forceless
beneath crumpled gray covers
when you, young beautiful woman,
touched his spotted forearm
smiled your sunny smile
touched his eyes with your own
and made him, for a moment,
a young man again.

Barefoot
Naked and barefoot
morning of summer sun
no graceful way
to walk on crushed rock.

In order to hang or take down laundry from a line, it is necessary to dance and wave one’s arms about a bit. You reach high to the line then bend down to pick up another garment or clothespin. Twirling while you do this may be enjoyable. It helps if the sun is warm and the breeze is gentle.
